LAPIS AKONG NAG HIHINTAY NG PANTASA

A story concept by Gerald Pesigan

When an out-of-school youth who works at a factory reaches the end of his contract, he is welcomed by a choice which can either maintain or improve his life.

As the bell rings, the facilitator of the program for out-of-school youth concludes their session for the week. The facilitator seems happy that youths who come to the session are lesser each week. Ronell, a 19-year old, walks out of the classroom and finds his backpack broken. He stopped at a local book store and looked for a new one. Surprised by the price, he decided not to buy it. Instead, he bought 2 packs of rice and a viand at a nearby karenderia.

During dinner, he is hesitant to open up the topic of his scholarship. He told his father that he will reach the end of his contract at the noodle factory on friday. Mang Ronaldo then stated that his friend offered him a good paying job and he wanted Ronell to take it. However, Ronnel wants to take the scholarship than the high-paying job. Silence filled the room as Mang Ronaldo processes their situation given that he has to shoulder all their expenses. Surprisingly, his father respected his decision and told him that it is his responsibility to provide for their needs and that it is okay for him to take the scholarship.

Ronell is then surprised when Mang Ronaldo gets a new backpack that he has been saving ever since Ronell started going to the Out-of-school program. Teary-eyed, Ronell accepts his father’s gift and they continue their dinner talking about their future dreams.

Another week has passed, the facilitator is welcomed by empty seats in the classroom. A student volunteer asked her why there were no students present. The Facilitator smiled and said, “enrolled na sila”.
